Brocaded Paper
Sumptuous Varieties Of Gold
Decorated Paper
Gold leaf blocking on leather
and parchment has been practiced in Europe since the early 16th
century. When applied to paper in the late 17th century, this
method of relief printing produced brocaded paper, which showcased
European craftsmanship and æsthetic exuberance, employing various
metalworking tools to cut patterns on thin sheets of copper or
brass. The patterns – ribbons, tendrils, arabesques and floral
blossoms – closely echo the sumptuous designs of leather wall
coverings and silk damask of the time.
